We started with the strong wind and slope against us at Writtle the U12 Champions. They had won all their matches and we had slipped to third and had been knocked out of the U12 cup in the first round so the omens were not good. We had lost at home to Writtle 7-1 with their last 4 goals coming in the final 10 mins as we tired from constant defending. They had scored 68 goals and only conceded 3 in 11 matches Villa being the first to score against them. Back to Sunday – we started well but with the wind and constant Writtle pressure most of the ball was in our half with numerous corners being defended. Villa played really well as a team and with some solid tackling the score remained 0-0 at half time with no clear cut shooting chances. This is where the game swung round, their tactics seem to have been to use the wind and gradient to build up a lead by half time – which had not worked. With some great defending Abby Constable in Goal playing her best game the whole side kept Writtle at bay and we were getting more chances to counter attack. 10 minutes into the second half Beth Greer ran at the two last defenders and lifted the ball past the Writtle Keeper. We were playing as a complete unit now but 5 minutes later after a few more Writtle corners one swung in which Abby saved onto the near post rebounded onto her and went in – a freak equaliser which even the Writtle home support seemed surprised at. Villa then gave there all with Writtle tiring in the conditions another ball found its way to Beth who slotted home again beating the last defenders. We then had 10 long last minutes to defend which we did without too much incident. We had beaten the Champions 2-1 away – they had 5 goals scored against them all season and Villa (Beth) has scored 3 of those.
